JetBlue Gets Big Break in Havana with First Scheduled Flight

U.S. carrier JetBlue’s inaugural flight to the Cuban capital touched down Monday on the Jose Marti Airport in Havana after a four-hour leg from New York City.

Giselle Cortes, director of International Airport for JetBlue, thanked the red-carpet welcome and offered her company’s condolences for the passing of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Mrs. Cortes said she was very proud of being part of the first scheduled flight from New York to Havana in over fifty years. “It’s also a historic day because JetBlue is celebrating its 100th destination as well,” she went on to say.

“Barely three months have gone by and scheduled flights between the U.S. and Cuba are now an unwavering benchmark and reference of what business opportunities between our two countries are really all about. Cuba is no doubt a safe and stable market for the United States,” Mrs. Cortes told the press and guests.

For his part, Hector Sardiñas Dominguez, coordinator general of ECASA -the island nation’s airport authority- said “it’s a privilege to open this route that will fly to the Cuban capital twice a day, adding up a grand total of 47 JetBlue flights all over Cuba. This is a positive step in the right direction to further implement the memorandum of understanding between Cuba and the United Stated.”
