Mexico’s VivaAerobus Continues National Route Expansion

The Mexican low-cost carrier VivaAerobus recently added to its national route network with the March 1 launch of new services from Mexico City to Ciudad Juarez, Culiacan, Torreon and Veracruz. On March 18, the company also incorporated new routes out of Guadalajara to Tuxtla Gutierrez and Villahermosa. The following week, additional routes from Mexico City to Merida were added and, starting March 25, Mexico City-Tampico.

On April 1, VivaAerobus will initiate new routes between Mexico City and Acapulco as well as Mexico City-Huatulco and Mexico City-Los Cabos. Once all of these new routes have been incorporated, VivaAerobus will offer services on 58 intra-Mexico routes along with two international routes -- Monterrey-Houston and Monterrey-Las Vegas.

Earlier this month, Juan Carlos Zuazua Cosío, the airline’s director general, announced that the company will add another 10 Boeing 737-300 aircraft to its fleet at a cost of $30 million. In all, the company plans to cover 25 new national routes this year, concentrating on Mexico’s three most important airports -- Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Internationally, plans are in the works to add two or three more destinations to the U.S. The company’s objective is to transport 3.8 million passengers in 2011.
