Montserrat Development Plan Includes Hotel, Villas
Montserrat Development Corp., a government agency charged with advancing the tiny Caribbean island's economic growth via tourism, has launched a master plan for development and investment.
The plan includes the creation of a new capital city to replace Plymouth, which was buried by volcanic ash when the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted in 1995, rendering the entire southern half of Montserrat inhabitable.
The new capital at Little Bay on the northwestern coast will include a resort hotel, luxury villas, condominiums, apartments, a 100-slip marina, shops and a commercial port for ferries, yachts and ships up to 1,000 feet long.
The master plan includes a number of investment opportunities, which has attracted the attention of local and international developers, according to Ivan Browne, CEO of Montserrat Development Corp.
Site clearance is under way in the area where the hotel and villas will be constructed. The Marine Village at the north end of Little Bay already is open with some beachside restaurants and facilities for divers and sailors.
