Nearly 75% of Managers Will Check Work Email Whilst on Holiday this Year

This year 73% of managers will check work email whilst on holiday according to new research by the employment law resource Employersguide which questioned 2,551 managers from various industries. This compared to 68% in 2013. In addition 53% of managers admit they will make at least one telephone call into the office whilst away.
Alan Price, managing director of Employersguide said, "If you wish to take a proper holiday then leave the phone and laptop at home - it's a no brainer."
"In the age of communication anyone can get hold of us. It is far too easy for us to go away, take our phone or laptop and check work email whenever we get a spare minute, however a quick look turns into something more and before you know it minutes turn into hours."
Price continues, "My advice is to put an out of office response on your email and this will let people know that you are not to be contacted. Look to see if there is anyone that can share the workload. Delegation is also key, look to delegate work to colleagues, it may be that you will need to train or brief someone in advance s plan accordingly."
"The whole point of getting away is that you can recharge your batteries, allowing you to return to work feeling refreshed and energized. This will hopefully provide you with a boost of energy and confidence allowing you to push forward."
Alan Price concludes, "You also need to trust people, your colleagues will be able to cope, we should delegate more, and allow them the opportunity to empower themselves. It could also be what your colleagues need, to feel trusted that they can just get on with the job, you will be helping to develop their skills whilst they will help you by taking away some of the work burden."
