Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries as Hurricane Erin Approaches

As Tropical Storm Erin strengthens in the Atlantic, becoming a growing threat to cruise routes in the Caribbean and beyond, cruise lines are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. While the storm’s final path remains uncertain, itineraries are already under review.
Royal Caribbean has been the first cruise line to act after receiving updated forecasts on Erin. The Vision of the Seas, scheduled to depart on August 14 for a nine-night sailing with a stop in Bermuda, will skip that port entirely. Instead, it will make an extended call at Port Canaveral (Orlando) and move up its arrival in Nassau, Bahamas, ensuring greater safety and comfort for guests.
Meteorological reports indicate that Erin could become the first major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) of the 2025 Atlantic season this weekend. Its projected track would take it near or just north of the Leeward Islands, passing by Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and parts of the Northern Caribbean.
Warnings in Key Tourist Areas
Authorities in Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and Saint Martin have issued travel alerts due to the potential for severe impacts: strong winds, heavy rainfall, dangerous swells, and port closures. Cruise lines are closely monitoring these regions with the aim of adjusting itineraries proactively as the situation develops.
Although no widespread cancellations have been confirmed, ships operating in the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas over the next 7–10 days are expected to adjust their routes. Vessels such as Rhapsody of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Carnival Celebration, and Norwegian Aqua could be affected.
The development and strengthening of Erin is a valid reason for cruise lines to modify itineraries in the interest of safety. Clear signs of route changes, like those seen with the Vision of the Seas, reflect a cautious and responsible policy. Passengers with upcoming sailings in the Caribbean or Atlantic should remain alert for updates, maintain open communication with their operators, and prepare alternative plans.
