New ICT Agreement between Taiwan and St Kitts-Nevis will Boost Role in Caribbean

Taiwan’s resident ambassador in Basseterre says his nation’s future cooperation in information and communication technology (ICT) with the federation “will boost St Kitts and Nevis’ role in Caribbean region.”

“This is also because your country has enjoyed a technology sprawling advantage which encouraged Kittitians and Nevisians to ‘think blue’ and made the warm bed to grow technological ideas easier. Nearly all the students in this country enjoy the benefits of a personal tablet or laptop which is a living proof of this advantage,” said Ambassador Miguel Tsao, who commended Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas; Glenn Phillip, minister of information technology; and the ICT team.

He said Taiwan has the capacity and caliber to contribute efforts in ICT development.

“Taiwan enjoys advantage in technology manufacture industry and service networks around the world. In 2013, laptop computers output accounted for 29.8% of global market share; tablet personal computers output accounted for 73.4% of global market share and we are a world renowned semi-conductor manufacturer with the Taiwan Semi-conductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) allocated 50% worldwide market share,” said the ambassador during the signing ceremony at the Taiwan embassy in Basseterre.

“I feel especially pleasant to work with you to renew the ICT agreement 2013 through 2018. Once this agreement is signed, we are running off again on the track of a sprint to pursue the goals of making this country not only ‘greener’ but also ‘bluer,’” said Tsao.

He pointed out that the JNF General Hospital e-medical system project has been under the process of re-activation and it will enhance administrative efficiency and benefit patients accordingly.

Tsao also said that the human empowerment program under this agreement and a pre-GWAN consultation and planning are also included into the beginning phase after this agreement taking effect.

He noted that, since 2007, St Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan have extended their cooperative reach into ICT to catch up with the stream of knowledge based economy in globalization era.

“From 2007 through 2011, with joint efforts, we established the ICT center which has accommodated hundreds of technology empowerment programs, as well as had sketched out the blueprints for local e-business development master plans for the following years,” said Tsao.
