Trinidad & Tobago Eyes Business from Gujarati Moteliers in the US

Caribbean country Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) is eyeing second generation of Indian moteliers in USA to set up mid level hotels and motels. The Caribbean island country is also expecting synergy with Gujarat in the tourism as well as plastic manufacturing sectors.

T&T is keen on promoting tourism in their country. “There are many Indians in our country and Gujaratis form a considerable segment of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago,” said Dr Rupert Griffith, minister of tourism of government of T&T. He also said that the Gujaratis have ushered in a revolution in the motel and hotel industry in USA.

Griffith also said that T&T is preserving indigenous technologies used in sugarcane crushing and sugar production industry for promotion of heritage tourism. He said that T&T has maintained GDP growth rate of nearly 8 percent for one decade and tourism sector’s contribution is around 7.6 percent.

T&T is also looking at Gujarat for investment in wellness spa and resorts apart from medico tourism. “Gujarat has expertise in these areas that can help us grow,” said Griffith. He also said that there could be synergy between Gujarat and T&T in the field of manufacturing, engineering, plastics and oil and gas as well.

T&T has large reserves of natural gas and oil and is the world’s third largest exporter of natural gas. “We would like Indian oil and natural gas exploration companies to explore opportunities in our country,” he added. Gujarat is the leading state in India in the plastic manufacturing sector and it has ample opportunity in T&T.
