US Air, American, Alaska and Virgin Announce New Codeshare Deals

Four U.S. airlines have struck new codeshare agreements with foreign carriers to make it easy for travelers with their connections all around the world.

While some have already begun, US Airways Group Inc., American Airlines, Alaska Air Group Inc. and Virgin America all plan to kick off the bulk of their code share agreements in the new few weeks, according to airline officials. The codeshare agreements make it possible for travelers to buy a single ticket for connections, in many cases.

US Airways already has started their codesharing with South African Airways and will soon launch another agreement with Avianca, the Colombian carrier which is the subsidiary of AviancaTaca Holdings.

For American, the carrier has started codeshare agreements with TAM Airlines of Brazil and LAN Colombia based in Bogota. Alaska Airlines will start codeshare with Aeromexico in 2013 with travelers able to use the same frequent flier miles for both carriers.

And finally, Virgin America has started a codeshare with Singapore Airlines — a move that airline officials say will make it easier for people to travel between Asia and several U.S. cities.
