The U.S. Labor Department reported the U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate edged down slightly to 7.5 percent. Even better news is the travel industry continues to add its share of jobs, with another 13,300 jobs in April, representing 8 percent of last month’s overall employment gain and the highest share since August.

“With gains in nearly all major travel segment categories, including food services and drinking places, lodging, retail trade and airlines, direct travel employment now stands at 7.7 million,” said David Huether, senior vice president of research and economics at the U.S. Travel Association.

Huether said that since economic recovery began in early 2010, travel has added jobs at a 15 percent faster pace than the rest of the economy, creating 398,000 jobs and making up 85 percent of the jobs lost during the recession compared to just 69 percent for the rest of the economy.

Those numbers once again serve to support U.S. Travel’s claim that travel us rising economic driver that powers job creation and provides millions of Americans with a promising career and solid opportunities to join the middle class. According to U.S. Travel, one in eight U.S. jobs depend on travel and tourism, an industry ranked among the top 10 in 48 states and the District of Columbia.
