Although the arrival growth wasn’t as expected in 2013, it was a record year. As a result of the actions conducted to increase the quality of the product and marketing, the winter season, which kicked off on November 1st, has grown over 8 percent to date.

Despite the widespread economic downturn, the Caribbean tourism industry has survived, albeit not entirely unscathed. However, the region is once again showing an increase in arrivals and moderate growth across industry value.

In 2013, AMResorts, which has properties in the Caribbean and Mexico, reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tourism practices. Most recently, the efforts of the brand management, marketing and sales provider were recognized by the Rainforest Alliance. The leading organization awarded AMResorts with the Sustainable Standard-Setter Award.

Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe yesterday expressed serious concern over the impact increasing crime levels could have on the Bahamas’ reputation as a global tourist destination. In a press conference to announce government initiatives to tackle violent crime, Mr. Wilchcombe said all Bahamians must play a part in helping to protect the country’s reputation.?

Jamaica welcomed its two-millionth visitor to the island for the year today. The country achieved the milestone this afternoon when American Airlines Flight 380 from Miami, Florida arrived at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James at 3:50 p.m.
