Jamaica Releases Trade Update as Storm Recovery Continues

The Jamaica Ministry of Tourism has issued a new trade update detailing progress on recovery efforts following the impact of Hurricane Melissa. The report outlines the reopening of key infrastructure, including airports, highways and hotel corridors, and reaffirms Jamaica’s goal of restoring full tourism operations before the winter season.

Tourism officials emphasized strong collaboration with tour operators, airlines and the travel trade. Special coordination teams have been assigned to assist stranded visitors, help rebook travel plans and manage logistical challenges related to emergency flights and incoming aid.

Priority has been given to restoring operations at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, which resumed partial operations for evacuation flights and limited commercial arrivals. Meanwhile, maintenance crews are continuing to clear debris and stabilize access routes to major resort areas.

Several large resort chains on the north coast have begun reopening sections of their properties and offering flexible booking policies. These include no-penalty date changes and credit vouchers to maintain visitor confidence and prevent long-term booking losses.

However, many small hotels and community guesthouses are still struggling with power outages and infrastructure damage. Tourism officials stated that these smaller operators will receive targeted assistance to avoid closures that could affect employment in vulnerable areas.

The update is seen as a signal of transparency and resilience, positioning Jamaica as a destination committed to rapid recovery while reassuring global travel partners that the country is preparing for a strong comeback.
