With international visitor numbers slumping in 2025, the U.S. is placing its hopes on the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup to rejuvenate its tourism sector. The event offers a global stage to highlight major cities, iconic landmarks, and diverse culture.

Travel analysts are warning of a steep drop in international visitor spending, estimated at $12.5 billion lost this year compared to prior projections. They attribute this decline partly to strict visa policies and rising geopolitical concerns.

Experts forecast a potential $29 billion economic loss, with international inbound travel shifting toward countries perceived as more welcoming or stable.

Marketing campaigns are now being designed to spotlight U.S. hospitality, cultural heritage, and regional experiences—from coastal drives to music-rich cities.

Local tourism boards in host cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are ramping up investments in infrastructure, training, and cross-sector partnerships to capitalize on the post-World Cup travel wave.

The looming major sporting event may serve as the spark needed to restore the U.S.’s competitive edge in global tourism, if execution is strategic and inclusive.
