Bermuda’s Elbow Beach Hotel to Close Main Building

The 101-year-old Elbow Beach Hotel on Bermuda’s south shore is shuttering the 131 guestrooms in the pastel-yellow main building for a planned renovation that will take several years.

The move will result in the elimination of 160 jobs by Nov. 30. General Manager Frank Stocek said the resort’s room count will drop 58 percent, from 235 units to 98 garden cottages. Guests will have access to three restaurants and room service during the renovation.

“The luxury vacation experience that our garden cottages offer far surpasses the experience we have been able to deliver within our main building, which has operated for more than 100 years and now is in need of a comprehensive restructuring to meet our guests’ expectations,” Stocek said.

Mandarin Oriental will continue to manage the property as it has since 2000. Saudi Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has owned Elbow Beach since 1991. The cottages and suites, which were renovated in phases between 2003 and 2007, will get advanced entertainment systems, new interior goods and upgraded bath facilities.

As part of the resort’s redesign, the Veranda Bar will be converted into a recreation lounge. Other enhancements will include a redo of the Bermuda Room in the main building, which will be restored to its 1908 design as a meeting and banquet venue for small groups, weddings and social functions.
