People working in the professional services sector in Commonwealth Caribbean countries will get an opportunity to enhance their ability to increase trade in professional services when the “Strategic Program for the Promotion of Professional Services” Project is implemented in Dominica.

The Project, coordinated and funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Barbados-based Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export), was unveiled at the Garraway Hotel in Roseau on July 14.

The small states of the Commonwealth depend heavily on exports of goods and services; however, the erosion of preferences by trade liberalization commitments have adversely affected their economic situation, hence the need for this Project at this time.

The Project is intended to enhance the capability of these countries to diversify their economies to increase their services trade, in particular trade in professional services. Dominica, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have been chosen by Caribbean Export as pilot cases to be used for developing an approach.

The overall objective of this Project is to build the capacity of Caribbean Export to assist its members in developing a Strategic Program for the Promotion of Professional Services

This Project will heighten the awareness of the economic potential of and development of export of professional services from the Commonwealth Caribbean.
