The newest addition to Grand Cayman’s accommodations inventory is the 26-unit Wembley building that opened last week as part of the 200-room Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Resort on the island’s East End.

The timeshare resort, with rooms available to visitors when not owner-occupied, sustained more than $20 million in damages from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 but has been rebuilt and reopened in stages since the storm.

The Wembley addition is named after the sports and events stadium in London, which also has been rebuilt and will be used as a venue for the 2012 Olympics.

Charles Clifford, Cayman Islands minister of tourism, said that the new building and the rebuilt resort tie in with the island’s Go East initiative, a campaign aimed at developing tourism in Grand Cayman’s eastern districts.
