Groundbreaking for Puerto Rico’s Isla Grande Sheraton Gets Cracking
The recent groundbreaking ceremony for the $209 million headquarters hotel in the Puerto Rico Convention Center District marked the launch of development plans for the 113-acre, $1.3 billion waterfront project in the Isla Grande area of San Juan.
Facilities will include more than 1,700 hotel rooms, retail shops, restaurants, theaters and residential units when the complex is completed in 2012.
Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila placed a cornerstone to mark the start of construction for the 500-room Sheraton property that will serve as the anchor hotel at the Puerto Rico Convention Center.
Scheduled to open in 2009, the hotel will feature a large, open lobby with a casino and entertainment complex, a music hall, meeting rooms, a full-service spa, restaurants and shops.
The convention center opened last November as the largest facility of its kind in the Caribbean.
