All tourist activity hit bedrock bottom in the Mexican destination of Isla Mujeres as visitors were stranded inside the hotels and just a handful trickled out to the beaches. Only a few golf carts and mopeds were spotted barreling down the south end as a result of heavy showers.

Few vessels docked in with tourists from Cancun, a situation that hurt retailers across the board and generated losses among businesspeople, the Novedades de Quintana Roo newspaper reported.

Thundershowers have equally affected other tourist circuits in the state of Quintana Roo, right in the Mexican Caribbean.

In Salina Grande Lake –where thousands of cubic meters of water were removed last month- the level inched back up Tuesday and a flooding alert could be in place would rains continue.

The newspaper also reported that the personnel of Aguakan, with the support of the City Hall, is getting all set to mount a system to drain water away from the lake.

Flooding alerts are also on in Salina Chica, while navigation of smaller boats and nautical activities are now restrained in Playa del Carmen.

The Civil Protection Office and the Port Captain’s Office have hoisted ban flags along the beach to forewarn swimmers about the gusting winds and raging waves. Downpours have altered tourist activity here for the last two days. Waste waters have also spilled over the area across from the main park.

In Cozumel, the Port Captain’s Office informed yesterday the harbor has now reopened for smaller boats to sail in and out.
