Hotel Builds in Mexico, Caribbean Up in April

As of last month, there were almost 30,000 Mexico and Caribbean hotel rooms in the development pipeline, marking an 11.4 percent increase from a year earlier, according to STR. Breaking out rooms specifically under construction, the region’s number of rooms rose 1.3 percent from a year earlier, the report said.

The STR data comprises projects that are under contract — in the construction stage, the final planning stage and the planning stage — but does not factor in projects not yet confirmed.

Upscale properties lead the way with 6,901 rooms under development, followed by luxury (6,586 rooms), upper-midscale (4,977 rooms) and upper-upscale (4,475 rooms).

The luxury segment was far ahead of all other segments when it came to rooms under construction, with 4,240 units. Upper-midscale and upscale followed with 2,120 and 2,008 rooms, respectively.
