Morgans Adds Puerto Rico Hotel to Portfolio

Morgans Hotel Group has signed a 10-year contract to manage the San Juan Water and Beach Club Hotel, a 78-room beachfront property in the Isla Verde section of San Juan.

The hotel is Morgans’ first in the Caribbean. The boutique hotel company has properties in Boston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami Beach, New York, London and Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Water Club opened in December 2001, following a massive conversion of the Colonial Hotel. Billed as San Juan’s only boutique hotel on the beach, the Water Club got off to a slow start, given the timing of its opening and the initial reluctance of people to travel after 9/11.

By the spring of 2002, the Water Club had attracted attention from the celebrity set as well as from companies holding small meetings.

In April 2006, the Water Club changed its name to the San Juan Water and Beach Club Hotel. Adding the word “hotel” to the name addressed confusion that the boutique property was a members-only facility.
