Peru Tourism in La Libertad Nearly Doubled in Seven Years
La Libertad is the only region in Peru that contains all three of Peru’s diverse geographical regions: the coast, highlands, and rainforest. Its capital, Trujillo, is a popular city destination, particularly for its proximity to surfers’ mecca, Huanchaco and archaeological site Chan Chan.
More than 1.4 million tourists are expected to have visit the region by the end of this year, when in 2007 the number was 600,000.
Tourism in Peru’s north-western region La Libertad has increased steeply over the last seven years, now welcoming nearly double the numbers who visited in 2007.
Bernando Alva Perez, the head of the regional office, puts the growth in popularity partly down to improved tourist services. He said that this was both because of private investment – with new hotels and restaurants cropping up in recent years – and from increased support from the public sector, “since it finances, for example, the construction of access roads to tourist sites,” said Alva Perez.
He also claimed that regional government has allocated more than 70 million soles (US$24.7 million) for road improvements in the touristic areas.
