Scrub Island Resort in the British Virgin Islands will open its doors Feb. 11 as the first resort to be built from the ground up in the BVI in more than 18 years. The $28 million resort is located on a 60-acre parcel of land connected by an isthmus to a 170-acre parcel that makes up Scrub Island.

Scrub Island is one mile offshore from Beef Island on Tortola, where the BVI’s main airport is located.

The resort will debut a selection of 26 oceanview guestrooms and 26 one- and two-bedroom suites. Scrub Island also will have a 53-slip marina, a spa and health club, a tiered pool with a waterfall, two restaurants and bars, four beaches and the Dive BVI shop.

The primary form of transport at the resort and around the island is golf cart. The Scrub Island yacht will transfer guests to and from the island.

Developers spent more than $600,000 on environmental-impact assessments before the resort was built. In addition, thousands of coral pieces and a half-acre of sea grass were transplanted, leaving 90 percent of the seashore at Scrub Island untouched.

Environmental measures in place include boat pump-out stations that do not allow any direct flushing or emptying of tanks into the sea and a sewage system with zero discharge. Introductory rates through March 31 start at $399 per room, per night, double, with breakfast.
