Two Caribbean Properties Grab International Recognition

Last May the CAST´s Governing Council convened in Puerto Rico with the purpose of planning the strategies to advance the development of a sustainable tourism industry in the Caribbean.

During the meeting, Council Chairman Sir Royston Hopkins made the announcement of a new regional award for Green Globe certified properties from their benchmarking data submitted for the past couple of years to Green Globe.

The Best Overall Performer Award was granted to Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort in Aruba, property that achieved best practice status in all indicators and has performed most significantly above the best practice level.

The Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa, also in Aruba, earned the Most Improved Performer for demonstrating the largest improvement in achieving the Green Globe benchmarks over two years.

A benchmarking result at or above the baseline level demonstrates to all stakeholders that the enterprise is achieving sound performance. A result below the baseline level indicates that an enterprise can and should carry out actions that will make beneficial improvements in performance.

This is the first time that these Green Globe awards have been made in the Caribbean. It is proposed that similar international awards will be announced during the Green Globe and Green Tourism Caribbean conference, to be held in Jamaica from November 1 to 3.
