Today, for the first time in more than fifty years, a scheduled, commercial flight took off from the United States and landed in Havana, Cuba.

U.S. carrier JetBlue’s inaugural flight to the Cuban capital touched down Monday on the Jose Marti Airport in Havana after a four-hour leg from New York City.

American Airlines became the first airline to offer a scheduled flight from the United States to the Cuban capital in over 50 years.

On Saturday, United Airlines will launch a weekly nonstop flight between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Havana - Cuba's capital that, although a mere 2½ hours away by plane, has been out of reach to Houstonians for half a century.

American Airlines said it will begin regular flights from the United States to Havana next Monday, said sources officially today.
