Cancun._ As Cancun’s territorial urban and commercial reserve is just five years away from nearing depletion, the main challenge will be the purveying of basic infrastructure for the Isla Mujeres-Tulum corridor, an area that will count on over 110,000 hotel rooms, 1.7 million inhabitants and an 11-million-tourist inflow by the year 2025, the Novedades de Cancun daily newspaper reported.In the face of this perspective, the federal dependence –in charge of boosting the tourist development of Mexico’s major vacationing centers and with a boastful Cancun as the “jewel of the crown”- is coping with the challenge of becoming economically self-sufficient in order to cease its exclusive dependence on federal resources.
Nassau._ With Caribbean tourism continuing to experience the devastating effects of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is putting together an exciting and stimulating program aimed at improving the region’s competitiveness and visitor arrival numbers to be looked up during 25th Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-25), Oct. 28-31, 2002.The CTO and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism are preparing to welcome over 1,000 delegates to the CTC-25, taking place at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort, Grand Bahama Island, The Bahamas. The theme of the event is “Reinventing Caribbean Tourism.”
Miami._ Cruise company Carnival has warned travel agents to oppose actions conducted by rival firm Royal Caribbean through a lobbying group aimed at blocking its bid to purchase British tourist vessel line P&O Princess Cruises.
Havana._ The search for flexible customs tariffs and regulations, coupled with other alternatives, are some of the actions the Association of Caribbean States (ACE) is currently taking to further transportation in the area, an element that has been wielded time and again as a snag to the region’s trade development.
New York._ The traffic of U.S. passengers dropped 8.7% in May 2002 compared with the same month in 2001, while airfares also went south by 6.6% in the same period of time, the Air Transportation Association (ATT), whose affiliated airlines engulf over 95% of the country’s total passenger and cargo flights, reportedly said.
Paris._ French tourist group Club Méditerranée registered losses for 21,929,824 euros in the first half of 2002 as compared with 5.4 million euros worth of benefits ratcheted up in the same span of time the year before, the company said.
