The UNWTO reported that through August 2010 international tourism continues to recover from the decline of 4.2 percent suffered in 2009 because of the economic crisis. In fact, UNWTO said in the first eight months of this year, the number of international tourist arrivals exceeded the record achieved during the same period of the pre-crisis year 2008.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) issued revised forecasts for both 2010 and 2011, which showed global tourism growth is set to beat expectations this year but will come in lower than first forecast for 2011.

It is not often that the Caribbean can say it is leading global thinking on an issue; but that it what happened this week when the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) released a detailed report on the damaging effect on tourism that the UK government’s controversial Air Passenger Duty (APD) is having. More importantly, its 29-page document suggested ways in which the tax might be restructured so that it is more equitable and less damaging to the region and the Caribbean community living in Britain.

In his message for Caribbean Tourism Day on November 2, Premier and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal said the board will soon have its full cadre of members and their new Chairman. He said a paper is going to Cabinet next week, “and you will hear the announcement.”

The latest results of a two-year-long study of Mexico’s 31 States ranks Los Cabos (San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas in the state of Baja California Sur) as second in public safety, tourist services and transportation infrastructure nationwide. Baja California Sur also ranks first in natural resources and environmental protection nationwide with an overall satisfaction index score of 97 percent.
