AAA Forecasts Record 45 Million Memorial Day Travelers
As the unofficial start of summer approaches, AAA released its 2026 Memorial Day travel forecast today, projecting that 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and May 25.
This sets a new all-time record for the holiday weekend, narrowly surpassing the 44.8 million recorded in 2025. Despite higher fuel prices compared to last year, the domestic travel surge is being driven by a 6% decrease in airfares for those who booked early, with 3.66 million expected to fly—a small but significant increase over previous years.
The record-breaking forecast is a mechanical necessity for the U.S. economy, signaling sustained consumer demand for leisure travel in the face of varying macroeconomic pressures. Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, noted that Americans are "prioritizing milestone trips" and holiday breaks more than ever in 2026.
This data serves as a critical strategic indicator for the hospitality industry, highlighting Orlando, Seattle, and Rome as the top destinations for what is expected to be an exceptionally busy peak travel season.
These figures point toward significant road congestion and crowded terminals. INRIX predicts the heaviest traffic on Thursday and Friday afternoons, with some travel times expected to double near major metros like Washington, D.C. and Seattle.
Travelers are being advised to utilize digital navigation and consider "off-peak" departures to mitigate the impact of the record-setting volume of cars and flights planned for the final weekend of May.
