Grenada Tourism Campaign to Feature Nation’s First Olympic Medalist
Grenadian sprinter Kirani James, the 2012 Olympic 400-meter champion, reigning 400-meter world champion and winner of the country’s first-ever Olympic medal, will be the focus of an online promotional campaign from the Grenada Board of Tourism.
Entitled “Celebration of Kirani: Celebration of Grenada,” the campaign is intended to “showcase the gracious and humble spirit of the Grenadian people as demonstrated to a global audience by Kirani James” during the London Olympics, and is designed to “turn heightened name recognition into incremental visitors,” according to Grenada Board of Tourism officials.
The campaign incorporates a specially designed logo featuring the 19 year-old James carrying Grenada’s national flag with the tagline, “Grenada: Gracious Every Day.” The logo will be featured on Grenada Tourism’s website, in digital advertisements and on social media pages, according to Granada officials. The campaign will also feature a “Quote of the Day” from James in traditional and social media, an dedicated island tour of James’ “top 10 things to do and see” in Grenada, weekly press releases, social media posts, and a video program featuring footage of James’ September homecoming from the 2012 Olympics.
James is today Grenada’s the most high-profile citizen. He first drew international attention in 2011 when he defeated reigning Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt in Daegu, South Korea, to win Grenada’s first gold medal in the outdoor world championships. “One of my jobs in my country is to keep inspiring the kids to be the best they can be,” James said at a press conference following his Olympic victory. “These are my people, and my job is to make them proud. As long as I do that, I’m happy with that.”
