Visit California has launched the state’s consumer destination marketing campaign as part of the Governor's Trade and Investment Mission to China, April 8-16. The organization also announced the appointment of the state’s first tourism ambassador from mainland China, model-actress Gao Yuanyuan.

Visit California’s campaign kicked-off with advertisements promoting the new Sina Weibo site on 12 LED billboard screens throughout Shanghai on April 8 and with online banner ads starting April 10. Fans of Visit California's Weibo page have the opportunity to participate in a quiz that will qualify them to win a trip to California. Gao Yuanyuan's star power will amplify the promotion, as she encourages her fans to participate.

“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capitalize on the rapid growth in outbound tourism from China," said Caroline Beteta, Visit California’s president and CEO. “Tourism is a powerful economic engine in California, and China will become our No. 1 overseas market in 2013, with over $2 billion in annual spending projected.” Visit California will invest $1.6 million this year into promoting the state to the Chinese.
