Construction has officially begun at the Port of Galveston to transform an existing cargo warehouse into the port's fourth cruise terminal. The $151 million project at Pier 16 will feature a 165,000-square-foot terminal and a $55 million parking garage. Slated to open in November 2025, the terminal will be the homeport for MSC Seascape, marking MSC Cruises' newest U.S. base.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on Aug. 20, with Galveston Wharves port director and CEO Rodger Rees, MSC Cruises U.S. chairman Rick Sasso, and other key stakeholders in attendance. The event included the unveiling of a large-scale rendering of the terminal complex, drawing applause from the crowd.

"This milestone represents significant economic growth and job creation for our community, as well as a new and exciting cruise option for the region," said Rees. "We are thrilled to welcome MSC Cruises, the world's third-largest cruise line, to Galveston."

Sasso added, "The groundbreaking of Cruise Terminal 16 is a major step in MSC Cruises' U.S. expansion. With Galveston as our fourth homeport, we’re making it even easier for travelers across the country to experience our unique blend of European style and American comfort. This state-of-the-art terminal will elevate the cruise experience, setting the stage for extraordinary vacations aboard MSC Seascape."

The port expects to handle over 2 million passengers annually by 2026, setting a new milestone in its 24 years as a cruise homeport.
